A trick vessel is a type of mechanical puzzle. It is an impossible object; a magical trick that seems to do something it should not; that should not, logically, be possible. I was fascinated by this idea and how it is a metaphor for so many processes: for art, for the imagination, for love, for memory; for history; for politics and for power. I hope the book deals with these things and that readers will find many secrets.   READ more here .

I took this photograph at New Street, Port of Spain, three years ago. I've had it on my computer for a while now. I used to see the man regularly around the city. People said he was an out-patient from St Ann's Hospital. I don't know his name. He never responded to any questions I asked. I don't see him anymore.

Belarussian poet Valzhyna Mort Contemporary arts space Alice Yard is currently hosting its first two writers in residence, both poets: Ishion Hutchinson of Jamaica and Valzhyna Mort of Belarus. On Wednesday 6 January, at 7.00 pm, Hutchinson and Mort will read recent work at Alice Yard, Woodbrook, and engage in a conversation about questions which their separate bodies of work address from different directions: language, translation, home, abroad, and personal and national history. It was taken by photojournalist Rhondor Dowlat on October 17, 2009, at a labour camp for Chinese workers at Chatee Trace, Cunupia, Trinidad. The picture appeared on the cover of the Sunday Newsday the next day. The workers that week had staged a stunning silent protest, walking from Cunupia to the Uriah Butler Highway before being taken to the Chinese Embassy.
